Recommendations By Use -
Birdwatching / Nature Viewing For bird and nature viewing brightness, clarity and field of view are critical. To achieve the best mix of these factors optics with a magnification in the range of 7x – 10x should be considered. The commonly recommended specification for this application is an 8x40 or 8x42. BAK4 prisms or high-resolution optics would be highly beneficial as they ensure bright / clear images. Anti-UV coatings (often ruby coloured) are not usually recommended for Bird Watching, as they tend to alter the colour of the image. However, some coatings are beneficial and improve the light transmission of the optics (look for descriptions such as fully, multi and phase coated). If the binoculars are likely to be used in wet conditions it may also be worth selecting a waterproof model. For low light observation try an 8x56 to increase the binoculars light gathering capabilities. For hide based viewing consider a spotting scope, these offer much greater magnifications but need to be tripod mounted for best performance. Please visit the Technical Guide for more detail regarding features of optical instruments. |
